Now since this Birthday Bash will include Bach-inspired music games, here are a few facts about the legendary composer you may want to peruse before the games begin …

The Man

  • Johann Sebastian Bach was born on March 21, 1685 … that’s more than 300 years ago!

  • Bach was born in Germany.

  • Bach was married twice and had 20 children.

  • While he was alive, Bach was better known as an organist than as a composer.

  • Bach was sent to jail for one month after trying to leave his job as organist for Duke Wilhelm Ernst.

The Music

  • Three of Bach’s compositions went into space aboard the Voyager space crafts.

  • Bach played the organ, the harpsichord, the viola, and the violin.Bach is considered one of the greatest composers of the Baroque style.

  • Bach’s music was not truly appreciated until the early 1800′s, when Felix Mendelssohn helped make it popular.

  • The Baroque period extends from 1600 to 1750.

  • Bach is known as the greatest Baroque Music composer. In fact, the year of Bach’s death marks the end of the Baroque era.

  • Baroque music is very organized and often contains many different lines of music all going their own way.

The Legacy

Today we hear Bach’s unmistakable music played in many forms! Here are three examples of the same piece – Toccata and Fugue in D minor. The piece is first performed in it’s traditional glory on a spectacular pipe organ in Germany. The second is on a violin in a very modern concert setting with “red hot” instrumentation. And the third is a classic orchestral arrangement brought to life with Disney animation. Enjoy!
